the journey
Biking the Great Continental Divide route is a test of true will. Although there is no comparison to the fight against cancer, Jeff wants to brave the elements across seven states, and two provinces in honour of those who fight. Jeff does this in support of two of his close teammates, and for all those affected by cancer. His bikepacking journey begins on the border of Mexico, and ends in Banff, Canada.

A note from Jeff
I’m a big believer that one must live one’s life by experiencing as much as possible that our beautiful world has to offer. To challenge yourself from time to time to get outside your comfort zone and see things from a different perspective. Ideally, these experiences lead to personal growth and a way in which one can contribute to help make the world a better place.
As I approached my 55th birthday I had the feeling that this year felt right to set upon a journey and take a 5-week sabbatical from work from May 24th to July 3rd to do something I’ve wanted to do for some time – touring the North American Continental Divide from Mexico to Canada via bicycle along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (“GDMBR”). The GDMBR is a 4,340 km route on 90% unpaved roads/trails. It contains 45,618m of climbing and the highest point on trail is 12,000’. I have chosen to ride it Northbound from Antelope Wells, New Mexico (on the Mexican border) to Banff, Canada and it travels through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia and finally Alberta.
While planning my adventure I asked myself “What about his trip would contribute to helping make the world a better place?” I realized I had an opportunity to do some good and thought about how I could tie it to my work, to my colleagues and the commercial real estate industry.
And so, I decided I would ride in support of two amazing women who I have come to know and work with over the years at Avison Young – Sarah Campbell and Kiana Kasei. Sarah and Kiana are young, vibrant and intelligent women who were stricken with two different types of Cancer. I pitched my idea to them, and they graciously agreed to share their story so we can collectively work to leave the world a better place by raising funds to support their respective areas of cancer. The fundraising goal for Project 55 is to raise $55,000 and split it equally to Sarah and Kiana’s charitable causes.
I’m not new to cycling but bike packing is a sport I’ve recently discovered. It is freedom and adventure in the wild exploring the natural world while having to solve challenges like navigation, weather, fatigue, mechanical issues and re-supply of food & water.
In some ways this is like my career in Commercial Real Estate. The flexibility and excitement of choosing your clients, solving their challenges and navigating problems that come up, all with the goal of “finishing” the project and meeting the objectives set at the beginning.
My ride, “our ride” will be about so much more than me seeking to complete the route over 5 weeks. It will be an opportunity to bring our community together to support our “own” commercial real estate colleagues who contribute daily, to raise funds for their specific cancer charities, and to set an example for others who may consider their own ways in which to leave the world a better place.
The Commercial Real Estate industry is one of the largest industries in the world and I feel extremely lucky to have found a place within it. I often liken it to the world of professional sports, where players and teams compete against each other – like our business, regardless of whether you are a Landlord, Broker, Consultant etc. We all compete, ply our trade and some day even play for the same team but in the end, we are all in it together!
Please join me in supporting our “own” and following this epic journey!
My sincere gratitude.

BikePacking the great divide route
What is bikepacking?
Bikepacking is a form of self-supported, off-road cycling where riders travel long distances, typically on trails or unpaved roads, while carrying all their gear on their bikes. Unlike traditional road cycling, where cyclists typically have support vehicles or minimal gear, bikepacking involves packing camping equipment, food, and other essentials directly on the bike in specialized bags.
